The deadline for Waivers and Exemptions is the 12th class day for Fall and Spring semesters and 4th class day for Summer semesters.

Selective Service Requirement

TEC Sec. 51.9095 requires that students comply with selective service registration in order to receive financial assistance from the state. For information on providing proof of your selective service registration to the university, please visit Exemptions & Waivers - Selective Service Requirement.

Study Abroad

Waivers and Exemptions will not cover Study Abroad Program charges. Exemptions and Waivers are for state-funded courses only, and the university does not receive any state funding for Study Abroad Program charges. (TEC Sec.54.2002)

With few exceptions as noted in the "Apply To" column below, most forms and documentation should be submitted to Student Business Services.

Waivers/ Exemptions

Listed below are waivers and exemptions that are processed through the University along with eligibility requirements and instructions to apply. Eligible students are responsible for applying for the waiver or exemption and ensuring the waiver or exemption has been applied toward tuition and fees for the current semester. Students are responsible for payment of tuition and fees not covered under the waiver or exemption and are subject to late payment penalties and late registration charges if tuition and fees are not paid.

Exemptions

Exemptions allow special groups of Texas residents or non-residents to enroll and pay a reduced amount of tuition and/or fees.

TEC Citation: The citation for the exemption or waiver in the Texas Education Code.

SB1210 Exempt: Texas State Senate Bill 1210 adds requirements for students to receive continuing awards of most exemptions and some waivers. Unless the exemption or waiver is exempt from SB 1210, the student must meet the university's financial aid GPA minimum for Satisfactory Academic Progress and must not have excess credit hours at the beginning of the semester in order to continue to receive an exemption or waiver.

Children of Disabled or Deceased Firemen, Peace Officers, Game Wardens, and Employees of Correctional Institutions  
Children of Professional Nursing Program Faculty and Staff  
Children of POWs and MIAs  
  • Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Texas resident
    • Are 21 years of age or younger, or 25 years of age or younger and receiving most of his/her support from a parent
    • Have documentation from the Department of Defense that a parent, who is classified as a Texas resident, is missing in action or a prisoner of war

  • Apply to: Present documentation from the Department of Defense that a parent, who is classified as a Texas resident, is missing in action or a prisoner of war to Student Business Services.
Dependents of Deceased Public Servants  
  • Eligibility Requirement: 
    • Are a surviving spouse or a surviving minor child of certain public employees who died in the performance of his/her duty on or after September 1, 2000

  • What is Exempted: Tuition and Required Fees. For assistance with room, board, and books, please submit all receipts to ssb@tamu.edu for reimbursement.

Ex-Prisoners of War  
  • Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Texas resident
    • Texas resident at the time of original entry into the United States armed forces
    • Was first classified as a prisoner of war by the United States Department of Defense on or after January 1, 1999
    • Is enrolled for at least 12 semester credit hours

  • Apply to: Enroll for at least 12 hours and present documentation from the Department of Defense showing current Texas residency as well as Texas residency at the time of entry into the United States armed forces to Student Business Services.
Firefighters taking Fire Science Courses  
  • Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Enrollment in the Safety Engineering Certificate program or the Master of Science in Safety Engineering program
    • Employment as a paid firefighter; or
    • Active membership for at least one year in an eligible volunteer fire department (refer to College for All Texans for additional information)

  • What is Exempted: Tuition and lab fees for courses offered as part of a fire science curriculum
  • SB1210 Exempt: No
  • Apply to: Present proof of employment as a paid firefighter or active membership for at least one year in an eligible volunteer fire department to Student Business Services.
Foster Care/TX Dpt. Family Protective Service  
  • Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Undergraduate courses only
    • Must be under 25 years old
    • Refer to College for All Texans for all eligibility requirements

Governing Board Waivers Faculty & Staff Fee Exemption  
  • Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Texas A&M University Faculty and Staff who are located in College Station and who are budgeted for at least 50% effort (including those with joint appointments)
    • All military personnel assigned to full-time Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) duty in the military science department at Texas A&M University
    • Baylor College of Dentistry Faculty or Staff

  • Apply to: Follow the steps located on the Veteran Services website to apply for the Hazlewood Exemption.
Highest Ranking HS Scholar (Valedictorian)  
  • Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Texas residents, nonresidents, or foreign students
    • Graduate from an accredited high school in the State of Texas
    • Graduate with the highest ranking in their high school

Good Neighbor Scholarship Program

  • Eligibility Requirement: Individuals who are members of a family in Texas in accordance with the agreement between the parties to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Nursing Grad Students Planning to Teach  
  • Eligibility Requirement: Individuals who are members of a family in Texas in accordance with the agreement between the parties to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

  • Apply to: Present documentation of eligibility to Student Business Services.
Teaching and Research Assistants  
  • Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Employed at least 50% effort
    • Spouse or child of teaching or research assistant employed at least 50% effort
    • Making Satisfactory Academic Progress
    • Enrolled full-time for the semester

  • Academic Departments: Use TWAPMTS to enter the waiver.

  • Spouse/Dependent of TA/RA Employed at Texas A&M: Non-Resident Tuition Waiver Spouse/Dependent Request and turn in to your employing department.
  • Spouse/Dependent of TA/RA employed at another Texas school: Submit a letter from employer verifying employment of at least one-half time in a teaching or research assistant position AND proof of marriage or dependency to Student Business Services.
Texas Tomorrow Fund Contract  
  • Eligibility Requirement: Individuals who are members of a family in Texas in accordance with the agreement between the parties to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Texas Tuition Promise Fund Contract  
  • Eligibility Requirement: Students using their TTPF funds to pay the semester’s tuition and fees are eligible for a non-resident tuition waiver. This will allow the student to pay the resident or in-state rate.

  • Apply to: Students will need to authorize their TTPF funds on the TTPF website. This authorization will trigger the waiver to be applied.
National Labs  
  • Eligibility Requirement: A student who is employed by a national laboratory, or a dependent of an employee of a national laboratory, is eligible for a non-resident tuition waiver. This will allow the student to pay the resident or in-state rate.
